Austria’s proposed gambling law amendments have been delayed at EU level after Malta submitted a detailed opinion during the notification process. The intervention automatically extended the review period, moving its expected end from 5 November to 7 December 2026.
Licensing timetable under pressure
The reform is intended to end Austria’s online gambling monopoly and introduce an open licensing framework. The legislation is still expected to progress through the Austrian parliamentary process before the end of 2026, according to comments reported by iGaming Business, but the shorter interval between ratification and the planned 1 January 2027 start date could complicate preparations for applicants.
At present, Win2Day, a subsidiary of Austrian Lotteries, holds the country’s sole online casino and lotteries licence. A number of other brands have served the market under licences issued elsewhere in the EU, including Malta.
What operators should watch
Prospective entrants will need to monitor the final law, application requirements and implementation timetable. Affiliates planning Austria-focused campaigns should avoid treating the new licensing regime as settled until the legislative process and licence conditions are confirmed.
