The NFL is incredibly difficult to forecast from week to week. The Browns looked like the NFL’s worst team in their 34-10 home loss to Jacksonville in the season opener. Of course, Cleveland then went to Tampa Bay and beat the Bucs, 23-19, as an 8.5-point road dog.
The Panthers allowed 59 points to Cleveland in their Week 1 home opener, the most points ever conceded in franchise history. Then Carolina traveled to Atlanta, and its defense was dominant in a 34-3 road win.
The reality is Cleveland’s not that bad, and Carolina’s not that good. Panthers QB Bryce Young has performed better than expected, but his career has been plagued by uneven play.
This is not a contrarian play on Cleveland at +8.5 on the adjusted spread. The Browns still have a decent defense even after losing reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Rams. Browns QB DeShaun Watson actually played mistake-free football with 238 passing yards, two TDs, and no picks last week against the Bucs.
Cleveland didn’t suffer a single turnover against Tampa Bay. If it repeats that feat, the home team covers this adjusted number and gets the first leg of our Wong Teaser home.
49ers -2.5 over Cardinals
San Francisco has looked like the NFL’s most complete team early this season. The 49ers rolled the Rams, 27-7, in the season opener down under in Melbourne. Los Angeles remains the betting favorite to win Super Bowl 61, but San Francisco could very well represent the NFC in the Big Game.
The Cardinals pulled off the biggest upset in Week 1, dismantling Survivor pools across the country by beating the Chargers, 26-14. They followed up that surprising road win with a 31-7 stinker at home against the Seahawks.
San Francisco oozes talent on offense, as QB Brock Purdy has all of these weapons at his disposal:
- RB Christian McCaffrey
- WR Mike Evans
- WR Deebo Samuel
- TE George Kittle
The Cardinals counter with a journeyman QB in Jacoby Brissett. No. 1 pick and rookie RB Jeremiyah Love scored a TD in his first game, but only averages 35 yards per game on the ground.
WR1 Marvin Harrison Jr. has barely been heard from, with one catch for 33 yards through two games. Arizona does have one of the NFL’s best tight ends in Trey McBride, who leads the team with 136 receiving yards and two TD catches.
The problem is that San Francisco ranks third in the NFL, giving up just 10 points per game. The 49ers are better on both sides of the ball, and only need to win by a field goal to cover this adjusted number.
